{"id":30,"date":"2013-02-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewordthisweek.com\/index.php\/2013\/02\/10\/sunday-14th-october-2012-my-god-my-god-why-have-you-forsaken-me\/"},"modified":"2013-02-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-10T00:00:00","slug":"sunday-14th-october-2012-my-god-my-god-why-have-you-forsaken-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewordthisweek.com\/index.php\/2013\/02\/10\/sunday-14th-october-2012-my-god-my-god-why-have-you-forsaken-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday 14th October 2012 &#8211; My God, my God why have you forsaken me?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">The Word This Week:<br \/><a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#hebrew_reading\"><br \/><span><\/span>Job 23:1-9, 16-17<\/a> and <a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#psalm_reading\">Psalm 22:1-15<\/a><a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#hebrew_oth_reading\"> <em>OR<\/em><br \/><span><\/span>Amos 5:6-7, 10-15<\/a> and <a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#psalm_oth_reading\">Psalm 90:12-17<\/a><a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#epistle_reading\"><br \/><span><\/span>Hebrews 4:12-16<\/a><a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu\/texts.php?id=223#gospel_reading\"><br \/><span><\/span>Mark 10:17-31<\/a><br \/><span><\/span><br \/><span>Thoughts on the Word:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This week I want us to do something a little different.\u00a0 I am not going to preach on the Gospel reading this week &#8211; though what I want us to do is Gospel focussed.\u00a0 This week I want us to take our time and read through the Psalm.\u00a0 Psalm 22 is for me on of the most beautiful, and yet horrible pieces of scripture there is.\u00a0 It is beautiful in that it is a piece of prophecy written hundreds of years before Jesus, which foretells his sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of the world.\u00a0 It is horrible for the same reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What I am going to do is post the Psalm in its entirety below (our reading for this week is supposed to only be the first 15 verses, but I want us to reflect on this as a whole.).\u00a0 Next to it I will provide some other scriptural references for us to ponder as we read the Psalm.\u00a0 What I hope is that we gain an insight into the mind of our saviour, into his suffering and into his joy, and that we also begin to understand fully that our salvation through the redeeming work of Jesus on the cross was a part of the plan from the very beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Take your time with this, and remember that the Psalm was written hundreds of years before Jesus was born &#8211; and yet God&#8217;s plan for salvation is evident even then.\u00a0\u00a0 Please let me know if this is as helpful and enlightening for you in your faith journey as it was for me the first time I put these pieces together.\u00a0 You can comment on this post or via our facebook page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I pray that the Lord will richly bless you and yours this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Daryl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>**Sadly the formatting doesn&#8217;t carry through properly on mobile devices &#8211; this is supposed to be a side by side comparison so if you can view it on a PC screen I encourage you to do so!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"wsite-multicol\">\n<div class=\"wsite-multicol-table-wrap\" style=\"margin:0 -15px\">\n<table class=\"wsite-multicol-table\">\n<tbody class=\"wsite-multicol-tbody\">\n<tr class=\"wsite-multicol-tr\">\n<td class=\"wsite-multicol-col\" style=\"width:50%;padding:0 15px\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>Psalm 22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? <br \/>2 O\u00a0my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and by night, but find no rest. <\/p>\n<p>3 Yet you are holy,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0enthroned on the praises of Israel. <br \/>4 In you our ancestors trusted;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0they trusted, and you delivered them. <br \/>5 To you they cried, and were saved;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. <\/p>\n<p>6 But I am a worm, and not human;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0scorned by others, and despised by the people. <br \/>7 All who see me mock at me;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0they make mouths at me, they shake their heads; <br \/>8 \u2018Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver&#8211;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0let him rescue the one in whom he delights!\u2019 <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>9 Yet it was you who took me from the womb;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0you kept me safe on my mother\u2019s breast. <br \/>10 On you I was cast from my birth,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and since my mother bore me you have been my God. <br \/>11 Do not be far from me,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for trouble is near<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and there is no one to help. <\/p>\n<p>12 Many bulls encircle me,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0strong bulls of Bashan surround me; <br \/>13 they open wide their mouths at me,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0like a ravening and roaring lion. <\/p>\n<p>14 I am poured out like water,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and all my bones are out of joint;<br \/>my heart is like wax;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0it is melted within my breast; <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>15 my mouth is dried up like a potsherd,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and my tongue sticks to my jaws;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0you lay me in the dust of death. <\/p>\n<p>16 For dogs are all around me;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a company of evildoers encircles\u00a0me.<br \/>My hands and feet have shrivelled; <br \/>17 I can count all my bones.<br \/>They stare and gloat over me; <br \/>18 they divide my clothes among themselves,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and for my clothing they cast lots. <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>19 But you, O\u00a0Lord, do not be far away!<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0O\u00a0my help, come quickly to my\u00a0aid! <br \/>20 Deliver my soul from the sword,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0my life from the power of the dog! <br \/>21\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Save me from the mouth of the lion! <\/p>\n<p>From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me. <br \/>22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: <br \/>23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! <br \/>24 For he did not despise or abhor<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the affliction of the afflicted;<br \/>he did not hide his face from me,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0but heard when I cried to him. <\/p>\n<p>25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0my vows I will pay before those who fear him. <br \/>26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0those who seek him shall praise the Lord.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0May your hearts live for ever! <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>27 All the ends of the earth shall remember<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and turn to the Lord;<br \/>and all the families of the nations<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shall worship before him. <br \/>28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and he rules over the nations. <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>29 To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and I shall live for him. <br \/>30 Posterity will serve him;<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0future generations will be told about the Lord, <br \/>31 and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0saying that he has done it. <\/div>\n<\/td>\n<td class=\"wsite-multicol-col\" style=\"width:50%;padding:0 15px\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>Verses for reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>And about three o\u2019clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, \u2018Eli, Eli, lema  sabachthani?\u2019 that is, \u2018My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\u2019 (Matt 27:46)<\/p>\n<p>And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed,  \u2018My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I  want but what you want.(Matt 26:39)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, \u2018You who  would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If  you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.\u2019 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, \u2018He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, \u201cI am God\u2019s Son.\u201d \u2019 The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way. (Matt 27:39-44)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his  mother\u2019s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, \u2018Woman, here is your son.\u2019 27Then he said to the disciple, \u2018Here is your mother.\u2019 And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.\u00a0 (Jn 19:25b-27)<\/p>\n<p>They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him (Matt 27:30-31)<\/p>\n<p>But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. (Jn 19:33-34)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture), \u2018I am thirsty.\u2019 (Jn 19:28)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><br \/>These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, \u2018None of his bones shall be broken.\u2019 And again another passage of scripture says, \u2018They will look on the one whom they have pierced.\u2019(Jn 19:36-37)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>But the angel said to the women, \u2018Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.\u00a0 (Matt 28:5-6a)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span> Jesus said to them,  \u2018I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and  whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.(Jn 6:35)<br \/> \u2018For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone  who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (Jn 3:16)<br \/><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>and he said to them, \u2018Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. (Lk 24:46-47)<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.
